Deadly falls from elevation continue to be a leading cause of death for construction employees and a hazard that also concerns the brewing industry, so OSHA is raising awareness of this hazard in its 11th annual Stand-down from May 6-10, in an effort to stop these preventable accidents.

Employers across the country are encouraged to cease their activities at some point during the week to talk to employees about how to work safely at heights. Any workplace can hold a stand-down by taking a break to discuss fall hazards and stress the importance of fall prevention. This could look like a safety activity, a 15-minute toolbox talk, or even hours of training that take place over the week.

Check out OSHA’s Suggestions to Prepare for a Successful Stand-Down and FAQ page for more information about the event, and read the Brewers Association’s (BA) 5 Steps for Preventing Ladder Injuries in the Brewery and the Master Brewers Association of the Americas (MBAA) Safety Tool Box Talk on Fall Protection to spark some ideas for your own impactful stand-down.

Employers can provide information about their stand-down and then download a Certificate of Participation, and share their story on social media with the hashtag #StandDown4Safety. The BA hopes to hear how craft breweries stood down to show their commitment to fall prevention and positive workplace safety cultures.

Lastly, join the FREE online Lunch & Learn webinar Wednesday, May 1 at 12:00 PM ET, which aims to improve awareness of working safely at heights in an effort to stop fall fatalities and injuries.

Find out if this applies to you by consulting the Brewers Association’s New OSHA Reporting Regulations article, which includes everything you need to know about this change— deadlines, what to submit, and how to do so. With more collected data, OSHA can more easily protect employees and help ensure the safety of brewery workforces nationwide.

I mean, there’s a LOT of work that must get done all the time! So this is an understandable approach. But one can quickly begin to wonder how all the pieces fit together.

The Brewers Association’s just-published A Guide To Understanding Basic OSHA Brewery Compliance lays it all out, so you can get a bird’s eye view of your safety situation—what you have covered and what might be missing. The post includes an easy-to-use table of OSHA regulations pertinent to breweries, and the article explains the table’s components and how to use it effectively.

Huge shout-out to Matt Stinchfield, whose book Brewery Safety was used to create this resource.
