American Craft Beer Recognized at 2023 Australian International Beer Awards

Director of International Relations

Steve is the international relations director at the Brewers Association. In his role, Steve manages the Export Development Program (EDP) which educates international trade and media about the quality and diversity of products offered by American craft brewers and helps member breweries grow their business in international markets. Prior to his role as EDP manager, Steve spent six and a half years as the assistant director of the American Homebrewers Association helping small & independent brewers and homebrew retailers expand their reach among homebrewers. He lives in Boulder, Colo., where he is a homebrewer, Certified BJCP beer judge, and Advanced Cicerone®.

Australia’s largest international beer competition, the Australian International Beer Awards, celebrated its 30th anniversary this year during the 2023 awards ceremony and gala. This year, the competition witnessed a record 2,826 entries from 404 breweries in 21 countries.

American craft brewers returned with a strong showing winning 95 awards, including 17 gold, 31 silver, and 45 bronze medals. Boston Beer Company’s Samuel Adams Gold Rush won the Champion Major Trophy for Best Non-Alcohol Beer. The competition also recognizes beer packaging design and awarded Calicraft Brewing Co. with Bronze in the Best Outer Packaging Design category for Cool Kidz IPA.

The Brewers Association (BA) Export Development Program (EDP) views international competitions as a key mechanism by which to generate publicity for the U.S. craft beer industry and assist EDP subscribers with gaining attention and distribution for their brands in select target markets. As such, the BA covers the cost of a consolidated airfreight shipment to judging sites and covers the entry fee for up to three brands per brewery in select international competitions for its member breweries.
